Cavalcade of Lights
For many, the holiday season doesn’t officially begin until the lighting of Toronto’s famous Christmas Tree in Nathan Phillips Square. This special event takes place every year at the event of the Cavalcade of Lights. The festivities include performances by some of Canada’s top musical talent, a fantastic firework display and an unforgettable outdoor skating party under the glow of more than half a million lights. This surely is a celebration that will warm the hearts of everyone, from the tiny tot to the young at heart. Don’t worry if you miss the kick-off event, the lights shine brightly every night for many weeks after. The Cavalcade begins November 24, 2018.
Toronto Christmas Market
A December holiday trip to Toronto is never complete without a visit to the Toronto Christmas Market. The wonderful Market is inspired by the European Christkindlmarkt that originated in Germany in the 1400s. This marvelous event celebrates the sights, sounds and scents of the Christmas season. Accurately set in the Victorian-era, cobblestone-lined Historic Distillery District, the Market brings together local craftspeople, artisanal food-makers and spectacular light displays. Admission is free Tuesday to Friday and is $6.00 Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. The Market is closed Mondays. The Toronto Christmas Market opens November 15 and runs until December 23, 2018.
Christmas at Casa Loma
A truly unique Christmas adventure is not complete without a visit to Toronto’s castle. For a memorable Christmas experience, Casa Loma is a must see. It was built by Sir Henry Pellatt spanning a three-year period from 1911 to 1914. Casa Loma is a tribute to the Gothic castles of days of old. As any true castle it is complete with soaring battlements and secret passageways. Casa Loma is North America’s only castle, and bejeweled for the Christmas holidays, it is a stunning sight.
Polar Express in IMAX 3D
One of the first films to be converted to IMAX 3D, Polar Express can be seen this holiday season in all its epic glory at the Cinesphere at Ontario Place. The film tells the story of a doubting young boy who takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole. What he encounters along the way both delight and scare him but the lessons he learns about belief, courage and friendship are invaluable. Ride along with the Polar Express and you too will find the meaning of Christmas. December 8, 9, 15 & 16.
